Alan took delivery of EnviroBed for the first time in January 2010, and says he hasn't looked back since. They have achieved a significant reduction in cell counts since changing from sawdust to EnviroBed - a previous problem which was significantly affecting the milk cheque.
"We're really pleased with the EnvrioBed and wouldn't use anything else now – not even if it were free. Our low somatic cell count means too much to us and we wouldn't want to risk a rise again. That would be a huge blow to the herd and the business," says Alan.
Alan was recently offered some lime ash to bed the cubicles, free of charge, but he declined the offer. "It may be free, but it would be a false economy if cell counts began to creep up again. We’re not willing to risk that – not for any amount of free bedding – however good it may claim to be. We’ve found something that works for our unit and our system and we’re sticking with it.”

"I have bedded my cows with EnviroBed™ for 6 years now and wouldn't change from the shallow-bed system that I now manage with ease. Last year I took a further 70 cows out of a straw bedded yard and put them onto EnviroBed™ cubicles and Strep. Uberis which was a problem has now all but disappeared.
"We rake the backs of the beds twice a day as part of the bedding up routine. It's worth spending this time as it keeps the bed friable and comfortable and prolongs the life of EnviroBed™. Using around 1kg per cow per day there are no damage hocks, it is never slippery and the cows have purchase on the surface when they get up. Milking is quicker because the udders are so clean and we have very few cases of mastitis. The result is more milk in the tank and more milk sold for the same number of cows."
